Theology

Theology at Catholic High is directed toward developing a mature faith within our students. The curriculum in theology is designed to educate a student about the four branches of theology: scripture, ethics, history and systematics. Each year is structured in a way that provides not only a sound knowledge of that discipline, but also offers a spring-board for the following year of coursework. Catholic doctrine is emphasized in its theological basis in Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Franciscan values and spirituality are integrated into the coursework for each year.
The theology classes cover the following content:
- Grade 9: Theology Scripture
- Grade 10: Theology: The Mission of Christ
- Grade 11: Theology: The History of the Church
- Grade 12: Theology: Systematics & Apologetics
012, 013 Theology – Scripture
CP, CPA | Grade 9 | Credit 1
Semester 1: The Revelation of Jesus Christ In Scripture
Semester 2: Who is Jesus Christ?
In keeping with the USCCB’S new Curriculum Framework, freshmen will study “The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture” during the first semester. The purpose of this course is to give students a general knowledge and appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures. Through their study of the Bible they encounter the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. The students pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally.
“Who is Jesus Christ?” is presented in the second semester. The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the mystery of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God, and the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. In this course students understand that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Revelation to us from God. In learning about who he is, the students also learn who he calls them to be.
022 Theology – New Testament
CP | Grade 10 | Credit 1
Students acquire a solid background in the origin, content, development, purpose and divinely inspired nature of the New Testament. Students become acquainted with the life, ministry and theology of St. Paul, and the theology of the four gospels. Our moral life in Christ is also being addressed in terms of:
- What does it mean to be Christ-like?
- What is the morality Christ established for his followers?
- Is personal freedom compatible with Christian morality?
- Special attention is given to the life of St. Francis with regard to his life of service and his role as a peacemaker.
032 Theology – The History of the Church
CP | Grade 11 | Credit 1
This is a survey course that begins with the Roman world into which Christ was born, and ends with the modern day Catholic Church under the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. It examines historical events in the life of the Church and how those events have contributed to the development of the faith. Students gain an appreciation of the influence of Sts. Francis and Clare on Christian spirituality.
042 Theology – Systematics and Apologetics
Grade 12 | Credit 1
Systematics theology is the careful analysis of the philosophical implications and the doctrinal content of faith as expressed in the creeds, doctrines, and theological writings of the Christian Tradition. This course is a capstone experience that draws on the theology taught in the first three years. The graduating senior then finds it possible, in the words of St. Francis, to “Preach the Gospel always, and use words if necessary.”
