FRENCH

This course is an introduction to the French language and the culture of the French-speaking world. The specific objective of this course is to help each student to develop an acceptable degree of proficiency in, and comprehension of, the four language skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Cultural material is integrated into the learning process to enable the student to develop an understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage and lifestyles of the French-speaking world. A more rigorous testing and grading standard will be placed on those students earning Honors credit for the course.
PREREQUISITE:
H – must be taking Honors English or have the recommendation of the instructor.

This course aims to strengthen and broaden the skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading the French language acquired during French I. More complex grammatical structures and verb tenses will be added to those taught during the first year of study. Students will begin reading longer texts and writing skills will be further developed through guided composition. Auditory and speaking skills will be developed more fully through classroom conversation and listening activities. This course will continue to integrate cultural material into the learning process, expanding the students’ appreciation of the cultural heritage and lifestyles of the French-speaking world. A more rigorous testing and grading standard will be placed on those students earning Honors credit for this course.
PREREQUISITE:
H – must have taken Honors French 1, or have the recommendation of the instructor.
CP1 – must have successfully completed CP French 1.

During this course, the students will continue to expand and perfect all of the language skills learned during the first two levels and to broaden their study of the rich culture of the French-speaking world. Students will do some original writing in French and will begin to read French literature in the original language. Significant oral participation in French is expected of students at this level.

This course is designed for students who wish to explore the French language and culture in more depth. It provides a thorough review of French grammatical structures and verb tenses. French literature, art, music and history will be explored with increased emphasis on oral and written communication. Students will be expected to work on a large variety of activities that stress verbal fluency and aural comprehension, as well as perfecting writing skills in the French language. College credit may be available to those students who have successfully completed this course.

Language activities stress verbal proficiency and listening comprehension. Cultural material is integrated into the learning process to enable the student to develop an understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the people of the German-speaking world. A more rigorous testing and grading standard will be placed on those students earning Honors credit for the course.

This course follows the same objectives as Spanish I (651, 652) but puts an increased emphasis on comparing and contrasting the grammatical and linguistic structures of the Spanish and English languages with the aim of improving skills in both. Additional emphasis will also be placed on the study and test-taking skills necessary to learn a foreign language.

Must have taken CP2 Spanish 1 or been recommended for CP2 Spanish 2 by the level I or 2 teacher.

During this course the students will continue to expand and perfect all of the language skills learned during the first two levels and to broaden their study of the rich cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will do some original writing in Spanish and give classroom presentations using the target language. Significant oral participation in Spanish is expected of students at this level. Cultural readings in Spanish will continue to be an integral part of this course.
PREREQUISITE:
H – Must have maintained at least a C+ average in Honors Spanish 2 or at least an A average in CPI Spanish 2.
CPI – Must have successfully completed CPI Spanish 2.

This course provides a thorough review of Spanish grammatical structures and verb tenses. The study of Spanish vocabulary is broadened with an emphasis placed on idiomatic expression. Reading about the history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world and selected reading from Spanish literature will provide material for compositions and conversation in Spanish. In addition, weekly conversations in Spanish on topics of interest to the students will be integrated into the course. The video program, Destinos, will become an integral part of this course. (College credit may be available to those students who have successfully completed this course.)
PREREQUISITE:
H – A C+ average in Honors Spanish 3 or B+ average in Spanish 3 CP1.
LATIN

Latin via Ovid presents the language via the delightful and instructive tales of Greek and Roman mythology as told by the great poet, Ovid. Knowledge of English, a word-order language, increases through constant comparison with Latin’s inflected structure. English and Latin vocabulary grow simultaneously. Reading ability improves in both languages. And, finally, the student is given a hint of the foundations, breadth and depth of western culture.
