Catholic High launches STEM program in August 2008
This fall, The Catholic High School of Baltimore will launch a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program for academically capable young women interested in careers in science, technology, engineering or math.
Catholic High’s STEM program will begin in the 2008-2009 school year with the addition of an introduction to engineering course, “Engineering: Our Digital Future,” for which 19 students are currently registered. This course and the entire STEM program will enhance Catholic High’s existing academic programs, which include three courses of study accommodating all ability levels: McCafferty Honors, College Preparatory, and Archangel.
Plans are in the works to augment Catholic High’s Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum, to acquire more equipment for STEM classrooms, and to establish partnerships with the academic and business communities in STEM fields, creating more opportunities for Catholic High’s young women. The partnerships will be made with organizations and companies in line with the mission of the school, including a commitment to empower women through education while maintaining a keen awareness of social responsibility.
“We are the only Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Baltimore to offer a STEM program,” explains Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod, president of Catholic High. “It breaks stereotypes and is an unprecedented educational opportunity for young women who qualify for the program.”
School principal, Mr. Keith Harmeyer, and his team of teachers are ready to challenge these young women and prepare them to be competitive in college and in the workplace.
“Students in the STEM program at Catholic High will be very impressed by the quality of our science, technology, engineering and math teachers,” affirms Mr. Harmeyer. “They all have excellent knowledge and teaching skills in their respective disciplines.”
Freshmen in the fall of 2009, the class of 2013, will include the first group of young women to complete the STEM program at Catholic High.
